In the mid-2000s, teeth whitening blasted into the trending sphere. We had the opportunity to sit down with the founder, Paulie Davila, of Blu Fin Whitening. This is a startup that is not only bringing teeth whitening into the spotlight again – but doing so in a creative way.
Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today?
In 2008 I had my jaw broken in 8 places. I had to undergo 6 surgeries and had my mouth wired shut for 4 months. After doctors removed the metal wires from my mouth my smile was never the same. My teeth had gaps I never had before, I had several crooked teeth and my teeth were stained and yellow from only being able to drink through my teeth for months. I lost confidence in myself and was extremely embarrassed for anyone to see my teeth. I wouldn’t smile like I used to. I would cover my mouth when I would talk to anyone in person. It was then that I noticed how much of a difference a great smile has on your self-esteem.
I looked into several whitening options to bring my smile back to normal only to discover the tedious process it is to whiten your teeth. Despite being painful and expensive it was also a dreadful process. So, I decided to start a company that would make teeth whitening fun, pain-free and cost-effective so no one had to walk around with a smile they weren’t proud of just because of cost or lack of time. I started a company that would remove the pain associated with teeth whitening. We offer organic solutions and products that are free of harsh chemicals so maintaining a clean and healthy smile was something you could look forward to.
We have now grown to a company that saves thousands of smiles. We started off only in the US and currently ship worldwide to 68 countries and counting.
Has it been a smooth road? What were some of the struggles along the way?
We officially opened online November 2016. It has been a rough and slow process. Although I have been in finance for 10 years, owning a business was completely new to me. I ran a non-profit for a few years but I came to realize that a for profit company is a whole new ball game. Being a business owner, you have to wear many hats. You are the quarterback of your team. Even with the greatest team, if the quarterback lacks skill or knowledge the team is destined to fail. In the beginning I ran into several issues. First being running out of capital for expansion. The second biggest issue was I realized that I was not an expert in marketing and it was impossible for me to manage all marketing alone.
I decided to bring on a marketing expert to the team. Although I thought he would be the ride to our success, our sales began to decline. He was a great marketer, however I lacked proper guidance and failed to give him clear instructions. I failed to show him my vision for Blu Fin Whitening and share where I wanted us to take the organization.
Since then, after losing tons of scarce capital, I’ve learned to have weekly meetings with the team to make sure we’re all on the same page running the same routes. We share our successes and failures and run as a well-oiled team where everyone is free to share ideas and add value to the team. Sometimes ideas work, sometimes they’re a flop but we give them a try nonetheless, move forward and improve.
Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for? What are you most proud of as a company?
We have tested hundreds of products and have conducted hours of research to bring our customers products that ACTUALLY WORK and are safe for the environment,
We are best known our top sellers, our 100% organic coconut shell activated charcoal scrub and our biodegradable bamboo toothbrushes.
One thing that makes me proud to be a part of Blu Fin Whitening is our donation of thousands and thousands of biodegradable toothbrushes to hurricane victims such as Hurricane Harvey victims in Texas and Hurricane Maria victims in Puerto Rico. For earth day we also donate bamboo toothbrushes to intercity schools and teen homeless shelters to teach youth the importance of oral care and Earth conservation.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
What has made us grow to where we are now is our company core policy that customers are the most important factor of our organization, without them we would cease to exist. We go above and beyond for our customers rewarding loyal customers with extra items, go into detail for them with questions they may have, walk them step by step by phone or email on using our products and we make sure every customer is 100% satisfied with every purchase or we refund them no questions asked.
We over deliver from pricing to shipping faster than the stated time frame. Because of our exceptional customer service, we have received tons 5 stars reviews on just about every product we offer. When customers purchase Blu Fin products, they also receive a team of experts to guide them step by step to a better smile.
